I received my PhD in 2008 from Minho University where I studied choroid plexus (CP), a brain immune barrier. During that period, I found that CP act as a sensor of peripheral inflammation. So, I wanted to know what happens to CP when inflammation is coming from the brain, rather than from the periphery. To answer that question, I went to Aloisi's lab at Sapienza University, Italy. There, I studied Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in mice, a model of brain inflammation.

Based on the experience gained from my PhD I decided to deepen my studies on MS. Most importantly, I found that lipocalin 2 (LCN2), a protein from my PhD, known to be altered in peripheral inflammation, is also altered in MS mice, a non-peripheral brain inflammation model. 

In 2013, I successfully acquired funding from the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) to study LCN2 role in brain physiology and in MS and to establish myself as an Assistant researcher. 

The project developed so far, and that I intend to foster, is key in bidirectional translational research. For that, in basic science, I have a team trained for the studies in the animal models and thus, it is my goal to put my own efforts in clinical research, where my main challenge is the consolidation of the Portuguese MS biobank. In the long term I intend to validate new possible therapeutic targets and to unravel whether decreasing brain inflammation prevents MS relapse and progression.
