About

Andreia Carvalho is a post doc at ICVS/3B’s PT-Government Associate Laboratory, at the School of Health Science, University of Minho. Her main line of research is related with the study of the physiological role of the protein involved in the neurodegenerative disorder Machado-Joseph disease (MJD), called ataxin-3. Her studies have been particularly focused on the function of ataxin-3 in neuronal cells and She is trying to establish a link between the normal function of the protein and the pathogenic mechanism of the disease. She has also been involved in other projects and studies, namely the study of pain perception in a tau knockout mouse model, the characterization of the secretome of MSCs and several pre-clinical trials.

More recently, She is interested in study the neuronal function in health and disease, by performing morphological and functional studies, such as electrophysiology.
