João Carlos Sousa (PhD) is an Assistant Professor in the medical school, School of HealthSciences, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal.
He is a neuroscientist who did his PhD in neuroendocrinology of thyroid hormones, namely how a carrier protein of thyroid hormones (transthyretin) influences behavior. He then did his post-doctoral training in the neurobiology of stress and later in the role of the epithelial cells of the choroid plexus in the modulation of cerebrospinal fluid content.
He currently is interested in understanding how the external millieu modulates neural progenitor cells proliferation and differentiation by using the subventricular zone, the cerebrospinal fluid and choroid plexus as an interface model between the periphery and the central nervous system. He also is interested in understanding how the extracellular matrix influences cell-cell communication in neural cells during development. He haspublished 24 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
He has reviewed for international journals (Neuroscience, PLoSOne, FEBS Journal, Frontiers in Neuroscience).
