About

Nuno Silva completed his BSc in Applied Biology in 2007 and received his PhD in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells from the University of Minho in 2012. His PhD work consisted on the development of novel approaches for Spinal Cord Injury Repair based on biodegradable materials and stem cells. His PhD was carried out in the 3B’s Research Group, in the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), both from the University of Minho, and in the Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research of the University of Toronto.

In 2012 he started a post-doc at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute dedicated to the development of pharmacological therapies to treat the injured spinal cord.

He is currently an author of  25  papers published in  international peer-reviewed journals. His work was cited more than 800 times and he has an h-index of 14. Additionally he is author of 3 book chapters and has more than 40 abstracts submitted to international conferences, being awarded with two prizes for best poster presentation on the 11th Meeting of the Portuguese Society for Neurosciences in 2009 and on the 2nd Meeting of the Portuguese Institute for Biotechnology and Bioengineering. He supervises or supervised 15 post-graduation students. Parallel to his research activity his has been acting as referee for several international journals. He is also member of the Portuguese Society of Stem Cells and Cells Therapy since 2008, member of TERMIS-EU since 2008, member of Portuguese Society for Neuroscience since 2009 and member of the American Society for Neuroscience since 2010. Finally, Nuno Silva has previous experience in project management. He was involved in the management, as a co-principal investigator, of the Santa Casa Award grant (66.000€). Currently, he is the Principal Investigator of one FCT Project (194.000€) and also the co-Principal Investigator of the Melo e Castro Award 2017 (60k). Recently, he was honored with another funded project, this time from NORTE 2020 (239k).
