This research area developed from the synergetic cooperation involving teachers and researchers from ECS with the Primary Care Respiratory Group of the Portuguese Association of General and Family Medicine (GRESP / APMGF) and with the International Primary Care Respiratory Group (IPCRG). The Scientific Area of Community Health aims to develop its’ research activity in the management of chronic diseases in the community, with a focus on chronic respiratory diseases, including asthma, allergic rhinitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). For this purpose, the multidisciplinary ICVS Community Health research team focuses on: clinical research, epidemiological survey, evidence based reviews and organisational research using qualitative and quantitative research methods. This area is currently developing a respiratory diseases cohort (asthma and COPD) in primary care in Portugal recording relevant data produced during the usual clinical management of these conditions. An online platform was developed for this purpose. This platform also provides a decision support for General Practitioners. The on-going projects contribute to the development of integrated programs for the management of asthma and COPD in primary care including epidemiological, clinical and organisational knowledge.
