SUMMARY:ICVS Seminar "Dendritic mechanisms underlying temporal memory structures"
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss Alcino Silva “Molecular\, cellular\, circuit and behavioral mechanisms of temporal memory structures” at the A0.02 auditorium in UMinho’s School of Medicine. \nAlcino Silva got his Bachelor of Science from Rutgers University in 1979. There\, he worked with William Sofer on Drosophila tRNA non-sense suppressors and minored on philosophy (epistemology). In 1983 he joined the graduate program of human genetics at the University of Utah\, where he worked with Ray White\, a pioneer in Human Genetics\, on the inheritance of epigenetic information (Silva et al\, 1988; Cell PMID: 2898978). During his post-doctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Nobel Laureate Dr. Susumu Tonegawa (1988-92)\, Dr. Alcino J. Silva introduced transgenic mice to neuroscience studies of learning and memory and pioneered the field of Molecular and Cellular Cognition (Silva et al\, Science 1992\, PMIDs 1321493 &1378648). His first independent position (1992) was with the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory\, NY\, where his research group had a key role in the development of Molecular and Cellular Cognition into a mainstream neuroscience field. In 2002 Dr. Silva founded and became the first President of the Molecular and Cellular Cognition Society\, an international organization with more than 7000 members and with branches in North America\, Asia and Europe. Besides work on molecular\, cellular and circuit approaches to cognition\, his laboratory also develops bioinformatics strategies to address the growing complexity of the literature\, including the development of a set of algorithms and a free web app (researchmaps.org) to track causal information in biology. In 2006/2007 Dr. Silva served as Scientific Director of the Intramural Program of the National Institute of Mental Health. He is currently a Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Neurobiology\, Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences\, and Psychology\, and directs the Integrative Center for Learning and Memory. He has been awarded a number of prizes and distinctions\, including most recently the Order of Prince Henry (2008)\, the Senior Roche Award For Translational Neuroscience (2009)\, and in 2012 he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement Science.

SUMMARY:ICVS Seminar " Vascular sequestration of trypanosome parasites and its implications to disease “
DESCRIPTION:Next monday\, 17th of april\, at 1 pm\, don’t miss Sara Silva Pereira’s seminar ” Vascular sequestration of trypanosome parasites and its implications to disease “ at the A0.02 auditorium in UMinho’s School of Medicine. \nSara Silva Pereira completed her PhD in Veterinary Parasitology\, in 2018\, at the University of Liverpool (UK)\, where she investigated antigenic diversity of African trypanosomes parasites.\nIn 2019\, she was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship to study how variant antigens affect T. congolense tissue tropism at the laboratory of Luisa Figueiredo\, in Instituto de Medicina Molecular (Lisbon). There\, she discovered that Trypanosoma congolense sequestration\, or adhesion to the vascular endothelium\, is a virulence factor\, suggesting that severe trypanosomiasis may be preventable by targeting parasite sequestration mediators. In 2022\, Sara moved to the Bernabeu Laboratory at the EMBL Barcelona to develop a 3D in vitro model of bovine brain vasculature\, a platform that allows direct assessment of sequestration. In 2023\, the Silva Pereira Laboratory will open at the Católica Biomedical Research Centre to investigate the interactions of trypanosomes with the host vasculature. \n

SUMMARY:Finding solutions in a dish: advanced human in vitro modeling approaches for fundamental and translational research
DESCRIPTION:Several groundbreaking discoveries in the past decades have contributed to the exponential increase of in vitro models’ relevance in both fundamental and translational research. In 2007\, the possibility of reprograming patient-specific somatic cells into (induced) pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) established the beginning of a new era of in vitro disease modeling studies. The additional development of versatile gene editing tools (e.g.\, CRISPR/Cas9)\, biocompatible and biomimetic biomaterials\, microfluidics based culture platforms and dynamic culture systems (i.e. bioreactors) have added further complexity to these models. The present course was designed to provide a multidisciplinary discussion environment\, mainly dedicated to the use of these innovative strategies and their application in the disease modeling field. For that\, we will bring together national and international experts from these different backgrounds to provide students and external participants knowledge on: \nStem cell biology\, particularly focused on iPSCs;\nEmbryonic development process and how is it recapitulated in vitro for obtaining the desired cell types from iPSCs;\n Modern gene editing tools and their application in disease modeling context;\n2D and 3D culture systems and how can they be modulated to improve cell maturation;\nIn vitro modeling studies as a tool for understanding organ-specific development and disease mechanisms. \nMoreover\, we will promote discussion on the advances and future challenges of these advanced in vitro models to support the replacing\, reducing\, and refining (3Rs) of the use of in vivo experimentation.
