He divides his time between Leuven and London: as group leader at the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Brain & Disease Research in Belgium and director of the UK Dementia Research Institute. He was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences Fellowship in 2020\, and has received several awards including the Potamkin prize\, the Metlife Foundation Award for Medical Research\, Alois Alzheimer’s prize\, the highly prestigious Brain Prize 2018 and Commander in the Order of Leopold. In 2022 he was one of only ten international researchers elected to the US National Academy of Medicine.

Isabel Soares recently won the “Prémio Ibérico de Psicologia 2023” award.\n\nIsabel Soares is a full professor at the School of Psychology at the University of Minho\, clinical psychologist and psychotherapist.\nShe was President of the School of Psychology between 2013-2016 and is currently Director of the Department of Applied Psychology.\nHis activity as a teacher falls within the areas of Developmental Psychology\, Developmental Psychopathology and Attachment Studies.\nIn terms of research\, he is a member of the Center for Research in Psychology at the University of Minho\,\nbeing coordinator of the Unit for Research on Development and Psychopathology and responsible for the Study Group on Attachment and Parenting.\nWith several projects financed by FCT and Fundação Bial and national and international publications\,\nher research has focused on the impact of social and family adversity on children’s development.\nIn the field of interaction with society\, she was the Researcher Responsible for the application\nof the Collaborative Laboratory against Poverty and Social Exclusion in Childhood\, named ProChild CoLAB\, approved and funded by FCT\, currently President of the Board.

DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss Teresa Summavielle ’s seminar “PsychoGlia: a tale of neurons\, drugs and glia” at the A0.02 auditorium in UMinho’s School of Medicine. \nTeresa Summavielle has a degree in biochemistry and a PhD in developmental neurotoxicology. Presently she coordinates the Neurobiology and Neurologic Disorders integrative program at i3S\, where she is also Vice-Director and Head of the Addiction Biology Group. Her research explores the crosstalk between neurons and glial cells under exposure to psychoactive substances and has a strong focus on neuro-immune regulation. She coordinates courses in Neurobiology of Addiction and Neurotoxicology in doctoral and master programs (University of Porto) and she is an invited professor at the Escola Superior de Saúde (Polytechnic University).Advocating for responsible experimentation\, she integrates the CARE committee at FENS. On a societal perspective\, she runs since 2008 a science-based campaign to prevent drug use by the adolescent population and is an acting city council women at the municipality of Porto.

SUMMARY:ICVS Seminar "Artemisinin Combination Therapy (ACT) in Africa - the beginning of the end?”
DESCRIPTION:Don´t miss José Pedro Gil “Artemisinin Combination Therapy (ACT) in Africa – the beginning of the end?”. \nPedro Gil is a molecular biologist by degree and leads a group at Dept. of Microbiology\, Tumor and Cell Biology at Karolinska Institute.\nHis main research area focuses on malaria disease and represents a composed perspective of in vivo (clinical trials)\, ex vivo and in vitro approaches.\nIn particular\, he has long standing on the identification of Plasmodium falciparum malaria genetic variation associated with in vivo (clinical) and in vitro response to combination therapy.\nTo this adds the search for a better understanding of the pharmacogenomics of native African populations\, under the pharmacological vision of a host-pathogen interaction context leading to parasite drug resistance.\nTo this end\, he has been successful in successive EDCTP-funded platforms\, namely\, WANECAM I resulting in the EMA approval of Artesunate-Pyroniridine (Pyramax®)\,\nWANECAM II\, presently running for the development of the novel KAF156-Lumefantrine combination\, and more recently the C-MARC project\, a molecular surveillance platform for artemisinin resistance in East Africa.\nHe has supervised over 17 PhD students\, having published 111 articles in indexed journal.\nPedro has also served as editor of several indexed journals\, consultant of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation\, Partnerships for Development Program\nand grant evaluator for Wellcome Trust\, Swiss Science Foundation\, Austrian National Bank Foundation\, National Institutes of Health\, among other.
