Daniela Antunes holds a degree in Biochemistry (2015) and a Master’s in Biochemistry (2017), both from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. Daniela started her PhD in 2018 in the Inter-University Doctoral Programme in Ageing and Chronic Disease (PhDOC) at School of Medicine/University of Minho under supervision of Dr. Agostinho Carvalho (School of Medicine/University of Minho) and Dr. Teresa Gonçalves (Faculty of Medicine/University of Coimbra). Before starting her PhD she had a grant under the supervision of Dr. Paula Morais (University of Coimbra), in a work focused on biotools. Her research activity is focused on the understanding the molecular, metabolic, and genetic mechanisms underlying the interaction between the host and fungal pathogens, envisioning to identify targets associated with increased susceptibility to invasive fungal infections. She is the author of several publications in international peer-reviewed journals including Nature Communications and mBio. During her PhD, she was awarded with travel grants to attend 6th CESC Central European Summer Course on Mycology: 3rd Rising Stars in Mycology in 2018 at Hungary and ENABLE 2018 in Denmark, and a best poster award in 9th Advances Against Aspergillosis and Mucormycosis in 2020 at Switzerland.

Host-fungus interaction and disease pathogenesis

The reprogramming of cellular metabolism is a fundamental mechanism whereby immune cells respond to infection. The sensing of microbial ligands by myeloid cells promotes dynamic changes in host cell metabolism to deliver a rapid source of energy to support…
