  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Drug Screening
  • Molecular Therapy

Luís S. Fernandes holds a BSc degree in Biochemistry from the University of Minho (2022) and is, currently, a MSc student in Health Sciences at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS)/School of Medicine, at the University of Minho. In the concluding stage of his bachelor’s degree, Luís directed his academic focus towards Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), thereby cultivating a profound interest in neurobiology and traumatic central nervous system injuries. Presently, he is developing his master’s thesis titled “Compound Library Screening for Neural Repair: Finding New Drugs for Old Problems.”, conducted under the supervision of Dr. Nuno A. Silva (ICVS/School of Medicine, University of Minho) and Dr. Maria Alice Carvalho (Chemistry Department/School of Sciences, University of Minho). The primary objective of Luís’s thesis is to perform a comprehensive screening for the neural repair capabilities of a recently synthesized compound library. This screening aims to identify novel potential candidates and elucidate their mechanism of action, thereby contributing significantly to the enhancement of our comprehension of traumatic CNS injuries. Furthermore, the outcomes of this research hold the promise of paving the way for pre-clinical trials in animal models and the eventual development of innovative therapeutic interventions.
