Researchers from ICVS and INL have developed an innovative multi-channel electrical stimulator designed to advance in vitro cellular research. This innovative device enables precise electrical stimulation of cells, promoting axonal growth and guiding stem cell differentiation, key processes in regenerative medicine and therapy development.
Electric fields can influence cellular behavior, playing a crucial role on functions such as nerve signal transmission and muscle contraction. By offering precise control over electric fields, the new stimulator provides researchers with a powerful tool to investigate their effects on various cell types. Designed for simplicity, affordability, and adaptability, it is well-suited for diverse laboratory applications.
When tested on various sources of neuronal cells, the stimulator significantly enhanced axonal growth, a critical step in nerve regeneration. In addition to influencing nerve cells, the stimulator was also tested on human mesenchymal stem cells. The electrical stimulation did not directly cause these stem cells to proliferate, but it did change what the cells were secreting into their environment. These secreted molecules, in turn, promoted the differentiation of neuronal precursor cells into neurons. This finding opens up new possibilities for using electrical stimulation of mesenchymal stem cells to influence their ability to indirectly support neural repair.
The researchers have published their findings in the journal BMC Biomedical Engineering under the title “Development and application of a novel multi-channel in vitro electrical stimulator for cellular research.” This paper outlines the design, testing, and potential applications of the stimulator, providing valuable insights for future research.
With its ability to enhance neural regeneration and influence stem cell behavior, this new electrical stimulator could be useful for researchers working in regenerative medicine, neuroscience, and cell therapy. Its cost-effective and user-friendly design makes it an accessible tool for laboratories worldwide.
