António Salgado receives the 2023 UMinho Scientific Merit Award


The ICVS researcher at the School of Medicine of the University of Minho was distinguished with the 2023 Scientific Merit Award during the celebrations of the 49th anniversary of the University of Minho, which took place last Saturday.


It was with “great honor” that António Salgado saw his research work recognized and added that it is a “privilege to belong to a list of awardees that contains some of the best scientists that the University has, including two of my advisors, Professor Rui Reis and Professor Nuno Sousa. I was surprised, I wasn’t expecting it, I thank the University of Minho for the support it has given me over these years and I extend my thanks to the School of Medicine and the ICVS.”


“This distinction is important for me and my team, it is a recognition of the work we have done over the last 15 years and also for the School and its research institute, because one of its researchers is recognized with an award of this magnitude . Consequently, it places ICVS and School research in a central position at the University of Minho.”, underlined the prize recipient.
The researcher also pointed out that the School of Medicine and the ICVS have an “almost unique” research ecosystem with “excellent” conditions, and he usually says that it is “only necessary to have good ideas, find funding and execute” for the project to take off. concretize.


Born in Braga, in 1978, António Salgado holds a degree in Applied Biology (School of Sciences, University of Minho, 2000), a PhD in Materials Science and Technology – Tissue Engineering and Hybrid Materials (School of Engineering, University of Minho, 2005 ) and Aggregate in Health Sciences (Medical School, University of Minho, 2018). He is currently Research Coordinator and Vice-President for Research at the School of Medicine of the University of Minho, leading the ReNEU thematic team at the Research Institute for Life and Health Sciences.
