ICVS Seminar “Artemisinin Combination Therapy (ACT) in Africa – the beginning of the end?”

June 27, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Don´t miss José Pedro Gil “Artemisinin Combination Therapy (ACT) in Africa – the beginning of the end?”.

Pedro Gil is a molecular biologist by degree and leads a group at Dept. of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology at Karolinska Institute.
His main research area focuses on malaria disease and represents a composed perspective of in vivo (clinical trials), ex vivo and in vitro approaches.
In particular, he has long standing on the identification of Plasmodium falciparum malaria genetic variation associated with in vivo (clinical) and in vitro response to combination therapy.
To this adds the search for a better understanding of the pharmacogenomics of native African populations, under the pharmacological vision of a host-pathogen interaction context leading to parasite drug resistance.
To this end, he has been successful in successive EDCTP-funded platforms, namely, WANECAM I resulting in the EMA approval of Artesunate-Pyroniridine (Pyramax®),
WANECAM II, presently running for the development of the novel KAF156-Lumefantrine combination, and more recently the C-MARC project, a molecular surveillance platform for artemisinin resistance in East Africa.
He has supervised over 17 PhD students, having published 111 articles in indexed journal.
Pedro has also served as editor of several indexed journals, consultant of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Partnerships for Development Program
and grant evaluator for Wellcome Trust, Swiss Science Foundation, Austrian National Bank Foundation, National Institutes of Health, among other.
