Francisco Almeida Wins the 2025 ESNR Scientific Award

Francisco Almeida, a PhD student and researcher at the ICVS – Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (School of Medicine, University of Minho), has been awarded the prestigious 2025 ESNR Scientific Award by the European Society of Neuroradiology (ESNR), one of the highest international honors in the field of neuroradiology.

The ESNR Scientific Award recognizes original, high-impact scientific work authored by early-career researchers under the age of 40, working in European research centers. Francisco Almeida was recognized for his research showing that Lewy body co-pathology impacts regional brain atrophy and cognitive function in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. The study, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia (“Lewy body co-pathology in Alzheimer’s disease and primary age-related tauopathy contributes to differential neuropathological, cognitive, and brain atrophy patterns”), contributes to the growing understanding of how co-existing pathologies may affect disease progression and treatment response.

The award was presented during the 48th Annual Meeting of the ESNR, held from September 17–21, 2025, at the Istanbul Congress Center, Turkey. This international event also included the 15th Asian Oceanian Congress of Neuroradiology and Head & Neck Radiology, and the 34th Annual Meeting of the Turkish Society of Neuroradiology, under the theme “Bridging Continents and Joining Cultures.”

This distinction highlights the scientific quality of the research conducted at ICVS and strengthens the role of Portuguese science at the forefront of international neuroscience.
