ICVS Researchers Awarded Cancer Research Fellowships

Three researchers from ICVS have recently been awarded competitive fellowships by the Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro – Núcleo Regional do Norte, recognizing their innovative contributions to cancer research.

The fellowships are geared towards developing initiatives focused on addressing the important issues that have to do with oncology including tumor metabolism, interaction between tumors and the immune system, and formulation of strategies that can be used in targeting cancers.

An example is the initiative led by Joana Pinheiro whose project “Rewiring tumor metabolism to block metastatic progression in triple-negative breast cancer” has received an Initial Research Fellowship. The project seeks to come up with different methods that would interrupt metabolic pathways through which tumors move in order to curb metastatic processes in the most malignant types of breast cancer.

Another fellow who has been granted the Initial Research Fellowship is Ana Raquel Cunha for the project “CD147 as a Potential Biomarker of Immune Invasion in MSI and MSS Colorectal Cancer.” The research aims to explore CD147 as a biomarker associated with immune invasion in order to help deal with colorectal cancer effectively.

Finally, Joana Pereira-Vieira has been awarded an Advanced Research Fellowship for the project “Mechanistic validation of chromene derivatives as KDM4C selective agents for acute myeloid leukemia therapy.” The objectives of this study include the validation of new compounds with the ability to produce novel therapeutics for leukemia treatment.

At ICVS, the continued support of researchers by the Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro represents an important step toward advancing the development of more precise and personalized cancer therapies.
