Daniela Sofia Abreu holds a BSc in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Aveiro and an MSc in Biomedical Research from NOVA University of Lisbon. DSA conducted her master’s research under the supervision of Sandra H. Vaz, PhD, at the lab of Ana Sebastião, PhD, at the Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM-JLA), U. Lisbon, PT. Her work focused on the role of astrocytes in synaptic plasticity modulation and cognitive impairments in Alzheimer’s disease. During her master’s, she received several awards, including “Best Oral Communication” at the Portuguese Glial Network 2021 and 2nd Best Master Thesis at iMM-JLA 2021.
Currently, DSA is a PhD student at the ICVS under the supervision of João Filipe Oliveira, PhD. She is involved in a project to understand the bidirectional communication between neurons and astrocytes in psychiatric disorders. She is using a combination of behavioral studies, electrophysiology, and molecular methodologies. Since joining the group, she has made significant contributions, co-authoring all recent publications from her team, and publishing two papers from her master’s research. DSA has presented her research at several prestigious national and international conferences, including oral communications at FENS Regional Meeting 2023 (Algarve, PT) and International Astrocyte School 2024 (Bertinoro, IT), and poster presentations at FENS Forum 2022 (Paris, FR), GLIA 2023 (Berlin, DE) and FENS Forum 2024 (Vienna, AT).
DSA is also active in the scientific community as a member of the junior committee of the Portuguese Neuroscience Society, promoting discussions and strengthening the neuroscience community in Portugal.
