About

António Salgado is a biologist and received is PhD in Materials Science and Engineering- TissueEngineering and Hybrid Materials, from the University of Minho in 2005, followed by a post-doc at the University of Toronto and Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) at University of Minho, dedicated to CNS regenerative medicine. Currently he is a PrincipaI Investigator at the Life and Health SciencesResearch Institute (ICVS) and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Medicine,University of Minho. His research interests are focused on the development of innovative therapies for CNS repair, namely on Spinal Cord Injury and Parkinson’s Disease. His main areas of research are: 1) Development of ECM like hydrogels for the transplantation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells into the injuredCNS; 2) Role of the secretome of MSCs in neuroprotection and repair, particularly the establishment of novel therapies based on the sole use of MSCs secretome. He is currently an author of more than 80 papers (over 2800citations; h-Index=25), and has delivery over 40 invited talks worldwide. As of September 2017, he has been able to attract near 1.5M€ through competitive calls and contracts with industry. He serves as an Associate Editor for Biomed Research International, Biochimie and BMC Neuroscience. He has received several distinctions for his work including the Gulbenkian Award on Cutting Edge Research in Life Sciences, and the Prize Melo e Castro for SpinalCord Injury Research, awarded by the Santa Casa de Misericórida de Lisboa.
