About


Sandra Costa (PhD) is Auxiliary Invited Researcher working at the Surgical Sciences Research Domain, at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), University of Minho (Portugal).

She is graduated in Applied Biology by the University of Minho in 2000, completed a Master degree in Oncology by Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar, University of Porto in 2003 and concluded a PhD degree in Health Sciences by Health Sciences School, University of Minho in 2007.

Her research goal is to unveil key players in lung development and injury, namely non-epithelial cells, granting us the possibility to manipulate them towards a desired phenotype and redirect the cellular mechanisms that favour lung repair, remodelling and regeneration, both in pre-and post-natal lung diseases.

She is dedicating her research to understand how tissue-resident macrophages orchestrate lung development. Furthermore, she is focused on unravel molecular signalling pathways underlying epithelial-endothelial crosstalk in lung morphogenesis, namely HGF/c-Met.
