António Mateus-Pinheiro (PhD) graduated in Applied Biology by the University of Minho and has subsequently developed his master thesis in brain neural plasticity and repair in the context of stress-related disorders and their treatment.
Recently, in 2016, he got his PhD at the School of Medicine, University of Minho (Portugal), under the supervision of Dr. Luísa Pinto, PhD, Professor Nuno Sousa, MD, PhD and in collaboration with Dr. Miguel Branco, at the Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London (UK). The title of his PhD project is "Adult Hippocampal Neural Plasticity: insights into its relevance in the stressed and depressed brain". In his thesis, he studied the relevance of adult hippocampal neural plasticity (namely, dendritic remodeling and hippocampal neurogenesis and gliogenesis) in the healthy brain and in the context of stress-related disorders, such as Anxiety and Depression. He also performed a genome-wide analysis to identify epigenomic signatures controlling hippocampal neural plasticity. He received a project grant from Epigenesys European Network to conduct this study as a junior PI, in a collaborative work between the ICVS (Univ. of Minho, Portugal) and the Blizard Institute (Queen Mary Univ. of London, UK).
He is now currently completing his final year of medical training as an MD student.
In 2012, he co-founded the ICVS spin-off BnML - Behavioral & Molecular Lab. BnML offers customized pre-clinical behavioral and molecular analysis services for testing the potential of new therapeutic compounds.
