Prize Melo e Castro on Spinal Cord Injury Research Awarded to an ICVS team

A team from the ICVS was yesterday awarded with the Prize Melo e Castro, from Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (SCML), on Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Research. This award is one of the two Prizes Santa Casa in Neurosciences, which represent an annual investment on neurosciences research of 400,000€, dedicated to two main fields, neurodegenerative diseases and spinal cord injury. The goal of the prize Melo e Castro (200,000€) is to promote new advancements and techniques in SCI repair/regeneration in order to overcome the severe motor and physiological limitations that this condition imposes, contributing for improvement of the quality of life of patients.
The project led by Dr. António Salgado, with contributions also from Prof. Nuno Sousa and Dr. Nuno Silva, has a team of 14 researchers with a multidisciplinary background from the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), member of the Associate Laboratory ICVS/3B’s, from the University of Minho. Its main objectives are the development of new paradigms of regeneration that could be applied for the future treatment of SCI repair.
