Chronic Stress as the connecting parameter between stress-related depression & Alzheimer’s disease
Although cumulative evidence suggests a continuum between depression and AD, and stress is suggested to play a detrimental role in both diseases…
Patrícia Amorim Gomes (MD/PhD) focus on understanding the role of stress in the pathomechanisms leading to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Depression. Her work has unravelled the effect of chronic stress on EVs and exosomes biogenesis as well as the contribution of these vesicles to Tau pathology propagation in the brain. She has developed a novel method for the isolation of EVs from the brain. Patrícia A. Gomes is also interested in human blood-derived biomarkers for earlier diagnosis, prognosis and follow-up of these neuropsychiatric disorders.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the leading cause of dementia, affects nearly 44 million people worldwide and costs over $600 billion/year (1% of the world’s GDP)…
While Tau protein is originally described as a mainly axonal, microtubule-associated protein, accumulating evidence supports the multiple roles of Tau in different cell…
