ICVS researcher Joana Pinheiro was one of the recipients of an R&D@USA Scholarship, awarded by the Luso-American Foundation for Development. This grant for Masters, Doctorate and Junior Researchers students allows them to carry out research internships in the USA, related to innovative scientific and technological topics.

Researcher Patrícia Maciel, from the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) of the School of Medicine of the University of Minho (EMUM), was elected director as a result of the vote held on 26 January. Patrícia Maciel succeeds Professor Jorge Correia Pinto in the position, with a four-year term and will be accompanied by Fátima Baltazar and Agostinho Carvalho as Vice-Directors.

The ICVS researcher at the School of Medicine of the University of Minho, Carina Cunha, was distinguished by the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) with €100,000. This FEBS Excellence Award 2022 will support research in the area of ​​neurosciences that Carina Cunha has been developing.

The ICVS researcher at the School of Medicine, Tiago Gil Oliveira, is distinguished with the Pfizer 2022 prize, awarded by the pharmaceutical company and by the Society of Medical Sciences of Lisbon. The sum of 30 thousand euros allows the researcher to continue to develop research in the area of ​​neurodegenerative diseases, more specifically Alzheimer’s disease.

Carina Cunha, ICVS researcher at the School of Medicine, is distinguished this Monday, November 14th, with the Maria de Sousa prize. The award-winning project, with a monetary value of 30,000 euros, aims to identify a profile for the group of neurons that are activated when we are exposed to rewards or dangers.

The €10,000 research grant will support the project “The Rostral Ventromedial Medulla As A Key Target Of The Maladaptive Response To Chronic Inflammatory Pain”. Its main focus is the role of descending modulation in the chronification of pain in patients with osteoarthritis.
